urbs Boeotiae, denominata a Boeotorum Alalcomenaeo, ut Plut. in Hellen. refert, p. 537. Edit. Steph. afferens simul causam nominis. Hasce Alalcomenas, inquit, nobilitavit Tiresiae sepulchrum et Minervae templum; unde Poeta, Α᾿λαλκομενηῒς Α᾿θην´η. Nempe Minerva credebatur nata esse Alalcomenis, et ibi erat in summo cultu. Itaque cum parva esset, et in plano exstructa urbs, semper tamen ἀπόρθητος, intacta, et inviolata mansit, quia ob Deae reverentiam Πάντες ἀπείχοντο πάϚης βίας, Ab omni vi omnes abstinebant. Ita habetur apud Strabonem. Putat igitur Vir Magnus, Alalcomenis factum nomen ab Ela Alcuma, i. e. Dea invicta, vel contra quam nemo insurgit, Melec Alcum, i. e. Rex invictus, Proverb. c. 30. v. 31.
